What is Podcast sponsorships & host-read ads?
What it is
Podcast advertising sells spots in your episodes: a pre-roll at the start, a mid-roll in the middle (the most valuable, because listeners are engaged), and a post-roll at the end. A host-read ad is delivered by you in your own words; a produced spot is an audio file the advertiser supplies. Ads can be baked in to the episode file forever or dynamically inserted at download time, so the same episode can carry different campaigns over the years.
How the money flows
Rates are quoted per thousand downloads, measured over the first 30 days of an episode. Sponsors book directly, through a marketplace (Podcorn, Gumball, AdvertiseCast, Podbean Ads, Spotify's Ad network), or through a podcast network that represents the show and takes 30-50% for selling it. Hosting platforms pay a share for ads they insert automatically. Payment is usually NET-30 to NET-60 after the campaign runs.
What it pays
Host-read mid-rolls run $20-50 CPM for US listeners; produced spots and programmatic insertion run $10-20. A show with 5,000 downloads per episode, four episodes a month and one mid-roll per episode earns roughly $400-1,000 a month; add a pre-roll and a second mid-roll and it doubles. Per thousand listeners per month, $60-200 is the range for a show that sells most of its inventory.
Requirements and who pays
Marketplaces list shows from about 1,000 downloads per episode; direct sponsors in B2B niches will pay high CPMs to reach even a few hundred of the right listeners, which is why a narrow professional show can out-earn a broad entertainment one with ten times the audience. Networks want consistency: weekly episodes, a growing chart position and a clean back catalogue.
Pitfalls
Reading the ad well is the job. Listeners forgive a sponsor they can tell you actually use and punish a script read in a different voice. Keep the count to two or three spots per hour, give every sponsor a unique URL or code so you can show results, and do not sign an exclusive network deal before you know what your inventory sells for directly.
