Pat Flynn started Smart Passive Income in 2008 after being laid off from an architecture firm, and from the first month he published an income report showing what the site earned and from where. He kept doing it for almost a decade, which makes SPI the longest public record of a content business growing from a few thousand dollars a month to well over a hundred thousand. The reports stopped in 2017; the final ones showed months above $160,000.
The property
A blog, a weekly podcast (the SPI Podcast, among the most-downloaded business shows) and a YouTube channel, all about building online businesses, plus an email list in the hundreds of thousands. The podcast became the centre of the audience relationship, which is why the case is filed under podcast: listeners who spend an hour a week with a host trust his recommendations in a way blog readers do not.
The revenue mix
The 2017 reports broke revenue into:
- Affiliate marketing, the largest line for most of the decade: web hosting (Bluehost Affiliate Program was for years the single biggest item, at tens of thousands a month), email platforms such as Kit (ConvertKit) with recurring commissions, and software and courses he used and recommended on the show.
- Online courses: Smart From Scratch, Power-Up Podcasting and later 1-2-3 Affiliate Marketing, each launched to the list and then sold evergreen.
- Podcast sponsorships on the SPI show and AskPat, sold directly to sponsors who wanted the audience of would-be entrepreneurs.
- Digital products and books (the "Will It Fly?" book, software tools) and, later, a paid community, SPI Pro, run on Circle.
Why it worked
Transparency was the marketing. Publishing the numbers, including the bad months, built a level of trust that made every recommendation convert, and the podcast turned that trust into a weekly habit. Flynn also diversified deliberately: when the hosting affiliate line looked too dominant, he built courses; when courses were launch-dependent, he added recurring revenue from a community. The reports show the mix shifting year by year, which is the point of publishing them.
What to take from it
Affiliate revenue from a trusted voice can be enormous in a niche where the products are expensive and recurring, and a podcast is one of the strongest ways to build that trust. The affiliate marketing guide covers the programmes; the podcast property page covers sponsorship and memberships. SPI is also the case for diversification: by the end, no single line was more than about a third of the total.
