Justin Welsh is the standard example of monetizing a social audience without depending on the platform's own payouts. He built a following of several hundred thousand across LinkedIn and X by posting daily about building a one-person business, then sold that audience two inexpensive self-paced courses. He publishes his cumulative revenue on his site and in his newsletter: past $5 million by 2024, with a business that is him, a laptop and a few contractors.
The property
The audience lives on rented platforms (LinkedIn first, then X), which is the weakness of every social case; Welsh's answer was to move people to a weekly newsletter, The Saturday Solopreneur, which grew to a few hundred thousand subscribers. The newsletter is where the selling happens, and the social feeds are the top of the funnel.
The revenue mix
- Digital products and courses: two products account for most of the revenue: The LinkedIn Operating System and The Content Operating System, priced at $150 each, sold through a simple checkout with no launches, no cohorts and no upsells. Cheap, evergreen, self-paced products sold to a large audience is a different strategy from the high-ticket course model, and it scales without his time.
- Newsletter sponsorship: a sponsor slot in the Saturday email, sold at rates a few-hundred-thousand-subscriber professional list commands.
- Affiliate revenue from the tools he recommends to his audience (email platforms, scheduling tools), a smaller line.
No platform ad share, no paid community, no coaching at scale: he has written repeatedly that he optimises for revenue that does not require his calendar.
Why it worked
Consistency and specificity. Daily posts for years on one subject, to one audience, built the following; the products are the exact system those posts describe, so the sale is obvious. Pricing at $150 rather than $1,500 removed the need for sales calls and made the products an impulse purchase for a professional. And the newsletter converted the rented audience into an owned one, so the business is not exposed to a platform algorithm the way a pure social account is.
What to take from it
A social audience earns almost nothing from the platform itself (see the creator funds guide); it earns when it is moved somewhere you own and sold something you made. Welsh's numbers are exceptional, but the structure, social → newsletter → cheap evergreen product, is the one the social property page recommends for anyone with a following in a professional niche.
