A Monetization Plan for a 20,000-Session Gaming Blog
At 20,000 monthly sessions a gaming blog can run ads, affiliate links, sponsorships and a digital product. Here's the order that pays.

Most advice about making money from a website is written for a site that does not exist yet: the one with 200,000 visitors, a devoted email list and an audience that buys whatever it recommends. Real sites climb there in stages, and the right monetization at 2,000 visitors a month is wrong at 60,000, and vice versa. Networks have traffic gates; readers have patience limits; some methods only work with an audience that comes back.
This is the ladder as it looks in 2026 for a content site (a blog, a niche site, a guide site) with mostly English-language, tier-1 traffic. Other property types have their own pages on this site; the newsletter, podcast and app ladders look different. The traffic figures are monthly sessions unless stated.
At this size no method earns enough to matter, and several will damage the site you are trying to build. Display ads on a 500-visitor site earn a few dollars a month and cost page speed and reader trust at exactly the moment you are trying to earn both. Selling links or guest posts is available (marketplaces list sites with no traffic at all) and is the fastest way to make sure the site never ranks.
What is worth doing:
What not to do: sign up for a push or pop network because it accepts you. It does, and it will pay you $3, and Google will notice the interstitials.
Now there is something to monetize, and the priority is to learn what the traffic is worth without hurting growth.
Display: Google AdSense accepts sites at any traffic level after a content and policy review, and at this size it pays $3-10 per thousand sessions in a general niche. Ezoic also accepts sites from zero and usually pays more, at the cost of a heavier integration and a page-speed problem if you leave the defaults on. Either way, run four units at most: one in the content, one sticky sidebar or footer, one at the end of the article, one below the fold. Measure session RPM, then leave it alone.
Affiliate: this is where the real money is at this size, because it depends on intent, not volume. Identify the five pages with commercial intent (comparisons, "best X", "X vs Y", "how to choose"), make sure each has a relevant program with a decent EPC, and place links where the reader is deciding, not in the first paragraph. A page with 800 visitors a month and a $100 affiliate RPM earns $80, more than the whole site's display revenue.
Email: send something, even monthly. A list of 500 people who open is worth more than 5,000 visitors who bounce.
Expected blended revenue at 10,000 sessions: $100-400 a month for a general site, higher in finance, software or B2B.
This is the awkward stage: too big for AdSense to be the right answer, too small for the partners everyone talks about. It is also the stage where most publishers make their first bad monetization decision out of impatience.
Display: the managed partners with lower gates become options. Journey by Mediavine takes sites from around 10,000 sessions, Monumetric from 10,000 pageviews (with a $99 fee below 80k), Newor Media from 30,000 pageviews. All of them run header bidding, which is why they pay more than AdSense on the same layout: typically $8-18 session RPM in a general niche. Read the exclusivity clause before you sign; you will not be able to run another display network alongside.
Affiliate: expand from five pages to every page with intent, add a second and third merchant per topic so one program cutting rates does not wipe you out, and start tracking EPC by page with Lasso or Affilimate. If a meaningful share of readers is outside the US, add Geniuslink so Amazon clicks from the UK and Germany credit to your account instead of evaporating.
Sponsorship: with a few thousand subscribers and a 40%+ open rate, list the newsletter on Paved or Swapstack and write a one-page media kit. The first sponsorship deal is usually small, $100-300, and teaches you what the audience is worth to a brand. In a professional or B2B niche it can be five times that.
Digital product: if readers ask you the same question repeatedly, the answer is a $19-49 product on Gumroad or Payhip. A checklist, a template, a short guide. It will convert 1-2% of the people who see it, which on a page with real traffic beats display by an order of magnitude, and it teaches you to sell before you build a course.
Expected blended revenue at 50,000 sessions: $800-2,500 a month for a general site.
At 50,000 sessions in the last 30 days, with majority tier-1 traffic, original content and GA4 in place, Mediavine will consider you. Its share (75% rising to 85%) and demand mean most publishers see a 30-100% lift in session RPM on the same layout. Its payment terms (NET-65) mean your cash flow will lag two months behind your revenue; plan for that.
This is also the stage at which the property's identity gets decided, because the three ways to grow revenue from here point in different directions:
Most sustainable properties do two of the three. The ones that do only the first are the ones sold in a hurry after a core update.
Expected blended revenue at 100,000 sessions: $2,500-8,000 a month; more with a product or paid tier.
At 100,000 monthly pageviews with US-heavy traffic, Raptive (formerly AdThrive) becomes an option, and its demand and NET-45 terms make it the usual next step for lifestyle and food sites. In tech and design, BuySellAds sells your placements at fixed prices to advertisers who want exactly your audience, at CPMs programmatic cannot reach. In any niche with identifiable vendors, direct ad sales through Google Ad Manager or Broadstreet and a media kit will beat the auction.
The other work at this stage is defensive. A site at this size is worth 30-45 times its monthly profit to a buyer on Empire Flippers or Motion Invest, and what raises that multiple is boring: traffic from more than one source, revenue from more than one method, no reliance on one affiliate program, no link sales in the history, clean books. Even if you never sell, the properties that survive algorithm updates are the ones built as if they might.
Chasing RPM with density. The difference between four ad units and ten is 20% more revenue and 30% fewer returning readers. The second number compounds; the first does not.
Selling links because a marketplace accepted you. Adsy and Collaborator will list a site with no traffic at all, and buyers will pay $50-150 a placement. It is the highest-RPM thing a small site can do and the one most likely to end its search traffic. If you must, sell labelled, rel="sponsored" placements in your own niche, rarely.
Treating a network's cut as the only cost. Ezoic's integration, Mediavine's exclusivity and NET-65 terms, AdSense's automated policy enforcement: each is a real cost that does not appear in the RPM. The requirements page lists the gates; the payouts page lists the terms.
Skipping the list. Every rung above stage 1 is easier with an email audience, and the ones that pay best (sponsorships, paid tiers, products) barely exist without one.
Monetizing a worldwide audience with US methods. If 70% of your readers are in India, Indonesia or Nigeria, display will pay a quarter of the figures above, and the right ladder leans on methods that do not depend on where the reader is: digital products, courses, and the platforms and networks with tier-3 demand. Run the calculator with the geography set honestly.
Whichever rung you are on, the planner will show which networks accept a property of your size and niche today, and which methods to add next.
