About EthicalAds
EthicalAds is a privacy-first ad network built and operated by the team behind Read the Docs, aimed squarely at developer and technical audiences. It places a single, unobtrusive text-and-image unit per page rather than a full stack of banners, and it does no third-party tracking or fingerprinting: targeting runs on the page's own content and topic (frontend, Python, data science, AI, DevOps, security) rather than a visitor profile, which is why the network works even against strict ad blockers and privacy-focused browsers that whitelist it.
Publishers keep 70% of revenue and are paid monthly once a $50 minimum balance is reached, by PayPal, Open Collective or GitHub Sponsors, or bank transfer via Stripe. Typical yield is modest next to a mainstream stack; EthicalAds itself quotes roughly $2.50 CPM as a rough baseline for EU and North American traffic, with wide variation by topic. The network is explicit about fit: it wants developer-focused sites doing at least 50,000 monthly pageviews, and sites under that are told they are "not a fit yet" during application, though documentation sites, open-source project pages and API references with smaller but highly qualified audiences sometimes get an exception.
Application is a short form; EthicalAds reviews the site, approves it with test ads to confirm fit, and publishers then add a small client-side snippet (no cookies, no consent-banner obligations beyond a site's general privacy policy). There's no contract or exclusivity requirement, so it slots in alongside AdSense, Carbon Ads or a header-bidding stack without conflict.
It suits documentation sites, open-source projects, developer blogs, newsletters and technical tool sites whose readers actively resent tracking ads and would otherwise block everything. It does not suit general content, lifestyle or non-technical niches — the advertiser pool is entirely developer tools, SaaS and technical products, so fill and demand collapse outside that audience. Compared with Carbon Ads, EthicalAds is more transparent about payout terms and revenue share; compared with a full display stack, expect meaningfully lower total revenue in exchange for a format readers tolerate.
Pros
- No cookies or tracking, so it works with strict privacy policies and ad blockers that allow-list it
- Advertisers are developer tools
Cons
- Developer and technical sites only
- Lower fill than a general network
