Directorist is a WordPress plugin for building business directories, job boards, real-estate listings or classifieds on a self-hosted site, with unlimited directory types on one install. The free version already covers unlimited listings, custom fields, multi-directory support, advanced search and Elementor integration with no credit card required, which makes it possible to launch a working directory at zero cost beyond hosting.

Monetization is built in: charge businesses to submit a listing, sell featured or upgraded placement, charge a fee for a business to claim an existing unclaimed listing, run recurring subscription plans through the Pricing Plans extension, or pay-per-lead through a dedicated extension. Payments run through Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net or offline/bank transfer, connected directly to the site owner's own accounts, so funds never pass through Directorist itself.

Paid tiers unlock the 40+ extensions and premium themes: Starter runs about $116/year for one site, Pro about $135/year for five sites, and Agency about $153/year for unlimited sites, with cheaper renewal pricing after the first year; lifetime licenses run $379-$749 one-time. Because listing revenue is collected directly by the site owner through their own payment gateway, Directorist does not publish (and, as a licensed plugin rather than a marketplace, likely does not take) any percentage cut of listing or lead sales — but that also means there is no vendor holding funds or handling disputes for you.

Best for a publisher or entrepreneur who already runs (or is comfortable running) a WordPress site and wants to own a directory outright rather than pay an ongoing SaaS fee per listing. Less suitable for anyone who wants a fully hosted, no-maintenance solution, since WordPress hosting, updates and gateway setup are still on the site owner.
