About AWS Data Exchange
AWS Data Exchange is Amazon's catalog for third-party data products, letting a company or individual publisher package data files, database tables, Redshift datasets or a live API as a listing that any AWS customer can subscribe to and pay for directly through their existing AWS bill. For a publisher sitting on a dataset with real commercial value (pricing history, firmographic data, geospatial layers, usage stats, an API with structured output) it turns AWS's own enterprise and developer customer base into a distribution channel without building billing, metering or a self-serve storefront from scratch.
Providers create a listing, set their own price (subscription, usage-based, or a free tier to drive adoption), and AWS handles billing, invoicing and delivery through S3, Redshift, API Gateway or a data grant. AWS charges tiered fulfillment fees on revenue collected for new subscriptions; the exact percentage is not published on its public pages, so publishers should request the current rate card before listing. A "Bring Your Own Subscription" option lets providers migrate an existing direct customer relationship and fulfill it through AWS Data Exchange without paying that fulfillment fee. Data senders also carry their own AWS infrastructure costs (S3 storage, data transfer, API Gateway or Redshift usage), which are separate from and in addition to the marketplace fee.
There is no published minimum traffic, audience or revenue threshold to apply as a provider, and no stated payout minimum or schedule beyond AWS's standard marketplace disbursement process. It suits companies and technical publishers who already generate a structured, regularly updated dataset or API and want enterprise distribution rather than a consumer audience; it is a poor fit for a typical content site since there is no self-serve, no-code path and the audience is AWS's business and developer customers rather than general web visitors. Because AWS doesn't publish revenue share or payout terms up front, budget in a discovery step with AWS before committing engineering time.
Pros
- Distribution into AWS's large enterprise and developer customer base with billing handled by Amazon
- Supports flat files, database tables, Redshift datasets and live APIs, not just static downloads
Cons
- Exact fulfillment fee percentage and payout schedule are not published; providers must ask AWS directly
- No self-serve, no-code path — best suited to teams that already run structured data infrastructure, and separate AWS storage/transfer costs apply
