About Shopware
Shopware is a well-established e-commerce platform out of Germany, strong across Europe, spanning a free open-source Community Edition and paid, hosted Shopware 6 Cloud/Enterprise tiers aimed at larger merchants. Note that the associated GitHub repository listed here (shopware5/shopware) is the legacy Shopware 5 core, which is in long-term maintenance mode; the current, actively developed product is Shopware 6, a completely re-architected platform built on Symfony with a headless-capable API layer, and it's what publishers evaluating Shopware today should actually look at.
For a store owner, Shopware is software (or a hosted service) you run your business on — not a revenue-share network. There's no rev_share, commission, or payout_min: you keep everything you sell minus your own payment-processor fees and, if you choose the hosted Cloud/Enterprise tiers, a subscription paid to Shopware. The Community Edition is free and self-hosted; Cloud and Enterprise pricing isn't published and requires talking to sales, so treat published price points with caution until you get a quote.
Standout features include a flexible page-builder (“Shopping Experiences”), strong B2B capabilities, multi-channel/headless commerce support, and a large agency and developer ecosystem, particularly in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It suits mid-market to enterprise merchants who need real customization and have budget for development or an agency; it's less suited to a solo creator wanting to launch a store this afternoon — Shopify or WooCommerce will get there faster with far less setup.
Strengths: mature platform, strong European presence, flexible architecture, good B2B tooling. Weaknesses: enterprise/cloud pricing isn't transparent up front, and self-hosting the open-source edition requires genuine PHP/Symfony expertise. General e-commerce fit, no strong niche specialization.
Pros
- Well-established platform with strong presence in Germany/Europe and a large agency/developer ecosystem
- Flexible: free self-hosted Community Edition plus hosted Cloud/Enterprise tiers for larger stores
- Strong B2B and headless/multi-channel capabilities
Cons
- Enterprise/Cloud pricing is not public and requires a sales conversation
- Self-hosting requires PHP/Symfony expertise; steeper learning curve than Shopify
